Does anyone know which is the correct spelling,I have quite a few in my tree and have just realised that I have been spelling them as in nut(Hazel)then noticed that some of them should actually have been Hazle ,are there different ways of spelling them or would it not matter?

Hi jjwndy
I have just registered as a member having seen your query (I think you may also be a relative!). My maiden name is 'Hazlehurst'and I have been undertaking some family research over the last year or so. Having now looked through a lot of Parish records etc it would appear that 'Hazlehurst' was spelt however the vicar etc presiding over the ceremony thought it was spelt. My grandfather was Stanley Sutton Hazlehurst of Wallasey and he had 5 brothers and three daughters (that I am aware of). Prior to Wallasey, the family lived in Bidston and prior to that in Frodsham (I am still trying to trace back the Frodsham connection from John Hazlehurst and Grace Roscoe.
Regards
Clare

Hi Clare
I am researching my mother's family tree at the moment. My Grandmother's maiden name was Hazlehurst and likewise I have seen it spelt Hazelhurst. There is a publication called 'Landmarks of Old Wallasey Village' by Thomas Wescott, written in 1859, he was just a young man then and actually takes you on a walk through Wallasey Village, stopping to name the residents and describe the sights in front of him. He mentions one of my relatives as follows: 'After Mrs Harrison's death and the removal of Bentley Dean from the Village, the iron house was occupied by Samuel Hazlehurst, joiner, why Haslehurst I do not know for he was brother to the Bartley Hasler. I have already introduced who always spelt his name as I have written it. So even then in 1859, people were spelling the surname different ways!
I am not sure if we are related. Basically, my mother's mum was Amelia Hazlehurst born 1900, brothers Albert b1900 and Joseph b1902 and possibly a sister called Nellie. They were all born and bred in Wallasey Village. Their parents were George Nathaniel Hazlehurst b1872 and Ellen Hayes b1872. Ellen had 2 sisters, Hannah b1875, Eliza b1877 and Maria b1878, brother Arthur b1880 and William b1874. Likewise they were all from Wallasey.
Would love to know if we are related.
Regards
Christine

Hi there,
My name is Tim Hazelhurst... great grandon of Joseph Hazelhurst who fought in the Zulu wars in South Africa.... His father was Edward Hazelhurst who arrived in South Africa, circa 1842 was the son of George Hazelhurst and Elizabeth of Claughton. Edward was baptised on July 24th 1825 in the parish of Bidston. If this rings a bell with anyone... please do not hesitate to contact me..

My name is Gerald Hazelhurst and my father was Alfred Ernest Hazelhurst. He was born in 1900 in Wakkerstroom South Africa, during the Anglo Boer War. He later practiced as an attorney in Pretoria. I would be very interested to learn more about the Hazelhurst's in South Africa as my father dies when I was 3 years old. We are of the Grace Roscoe / John Hazelhurst Down-line. I am part of a group researching the Hazelhurst ancestry in South Africa. We have recently published a website "www.hazelhurst.co.za". Please feel free to contact me through the website. Regards, Gerald Hazelhurst

Hi I have Hazlehurst relatives in Wallasey and other places on the Wirral and have got together quite a bit of information. Samuel Hazlehurst joiner was my grt grt granddad and he was the brother to Thomas Bartley Hasler and had a lot more siblings, his father was John who married Ann Bartley hence Thomas' middle name. So far there have been 19 different spellings and variations of the name I think a lot were down to what the vicar thought he heard or the officials own variation of the name, incidently a lot of Wirral Hazlehursts hopped over the river to marry in Liverpool then hopped back so they take a bit of sorting out from the Liverpool branch of Hazlehursts who come down from a Warrington/Runcorn branch and trace back to Frodsham eventually where a lot of them worked the rivers as flatmen, the Wirral branch worked mainly on the land or as blacksmiths/fishermen or tradesmen, i'm willing to try to answer questions on the branches if I can Hazel (no prizes for guessing where I got my name from)

Hi we too have both spellings on our tree too, albeit distant connections. i think it depended on the individual who writing the names at the time, also many of our ancestors were illiterate ansd would not have known if they had been spelt right or not. We have a family website that may be of interest to you with some of the Hazle(el)hurts on there, do get in touch! Regards Jess

Hi all, my mother was a Hazlehurst and links back to Grace Roscoe and John Hazlehurst. There was a tale that the surname was changed due to a disagreement within the family but I can not establish that.
Happy to share info with anyone and potentailly meet new relatives.
Stephen
