Hi Margaret Sorry for long delay in replying. Got so wrapped up in having full access to Ancestry.com for 31 days free of charge. I think this is your Thomas. Details as follows:- DEVONPORT K 18906 Thomas McGURN born 23 January 1893 in Widnes. Occ Labourer Oil Mills Signed on 23 April 1913 for 12 years. Age 28, height 5ft 6 1/2 inches Hair Dark Brown, Grey eyes, fresh complextion had 4 scars right abdomen. Postings Vindi II Stoker April - Sept 1913 Exmouth Sept 1913 - May 1914 Vindi II May - July 1914 Monmouth July - Nov 1914. DD (Died on Duty) Lost when HMS Monmouth was sunk in action off Chilean coast. Remarks According to R/S form AG 14d dated 11/2/20 in connection with Will No 5692/14 mans correct name McGirl or McGurn I did check the 1901 census and the 1891 census and found him under McGirl. I agree with you about the difficulty of searching for McGirl/McGurl and even for my branch McGurn. I find we are sometimes spelt as McGunn even McGurr. I do wonder if at one time we are all connected as in the 19c a lot of people especially those who came over from Ireland couldn't write so had to rely on how their names were spelt on those who could write. KInd regards Jean

Further information on Thomas McGURL (McGURN). On the CWG site Thomas is listed as THOMAS McGURN parents Thomas and Norah McGurn of 51 Ebden St Liverpool.
I now have a copy of Gores Directory 1914 and living in Ebden St is Thomas McGURN. So it looks very much like this family have used both spellings.

Further info regarding Thomas McGurn aka Thomas McGurl/McGirl born Widnes.
It would appear that this family have used both the names McGurn and McGurl.
According to the WWI Service Records that Thomas McGURN wife Noral, enlisted in the South Lancs Regiment but was medically discharged as medically unfit. (Can't read the reason) on 6 Sept 1914. This record also shows place born Liverpool which is crossed out and Widnes written in it's place.
Checking the 1911 census the family is down as McGURL, Head Thomas, Wife Norah, son Thomas.
Thomas Snr and wife Norah are also on 1891 census as McGURL.
In WWI son Thomas died when HMS Monmouth sank 1 Nov 1914 then in Sept 1914, father Thomas joined up in the Army but was medically discharged.
Not sure why both men used the surname McGURN when in the forces but it looks like their name may have been originally McGurn but for some reason changed it. Had this happen with a female of my HARRIS sbranch of the family who changed her name to HARRIES.
