Hello - I'm looking for members of my great-grandmother's family. We know very little about them. They appear to have lived in Liverpool from around 1884 to at least 1901, when some of them appear on the census. In 1891, I have the following members living at 31 Russian Drive:
James Wylie 31 born Scotland
Susan Wylie 43 born Birmingham, Warwickshire
Annie Wylie 22 born London, Middlesex
Harry Wylie 21 born London, Middlesex
Alex Wylie 18 born London, Middlesex
Agnes Wylie 17 born London, Middlesex
Fred Wylie 15 born London, Middlesex
Thomas Wylie 10 born Staffordshire
Elizabeth Wylie 8 born Birmingham, Warwickshire
James Wylie 6 born Liverpool, Lancashire
Lee Wylie 5 born Liverpool, Lancashire
James Sr, Harry, and Alex are all described as tailors, and Annie (my ggrandmother) is a tailoress. James Sr is listed as step-father to Annie, Harry, Alex, Agnes and Fred, and natural father to the rest. Susan is listed as mother to all of them.
I can follow what happened to some of them over the next few years. My ggrandmother married in 1895. with Agnes and Fred as witnesses. Lee (or Lees Currie as he is listed in the BMD) died in 1896 at the age of 10. James Sr appears to have died in 1898 at 38, and Susan followed him in around 1900 at 52. On the 1901 census, we have:
Agnes Wylie 23 born London, Middlesex
Thomas Wylie 20 born Dudley Port, Staffordshire
Elizabeth Wylie 18 born Birmingham, Warwickshire
James Wylie 16 born Liverpool, Lancashire
Thomas and James are again described as tailors. My ggrandmother was living at Failsworth with her husband and daughter (my grandmother):
Ernest Price 29 born Birmingham, Warwickshire
Annie Price 27 born London, Middlesex
Dorothy Price 4 born Liverpool, Lancashire
You might notice that both Annie and Agnes lost a few years in age between 1891 and 1901, but these are definitely the same people. Initially I thought these might just be transcription errors, but as my grandmother Dorothy shaved 4 years off her age when she got married, it might be a family tradition for the women to lie about their age!
One problem I have here are that I can't find any sign of this family before 1881 or after about 1904 when Agnes married. A kind person checked the 1911 Gore's and none of them seem to be around by then. A second huge problem is that as James Sr is stepfather to the first 5 children (including my gg), I am assuming that Wylie was not their original name, but that they took it on after their mother's remarriage. James Sr is listed as father on my gg's marriage certificate, but he is actually too young to be her natural father. I can't find a marriage record for James and Susan, so I'm having no luck figuring out what their original name (or names) might be. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be very pleased to hear them. I'm in Canada, so I don't have easy access to anything but what I can get from the BMD and Ancestry.uk. I've cross-posted this in the main site as well. Thanks for any help you can give me!
